Hirsutism and Hypertrichosis Training
At Beauty and Health Institute, we don’t treat hair, we treat the story behind it. This curriculum topic teaches you to distinguish between hirsutism, where androgen-driven hair grows in male-pattern areas like the chin, upper lip, or chest in women, and hypertrichosis, where excess hair appears anywhere on the body regardless of gender or hormones. As part of our Electrolysis Program, you’ll learn how to recognize the patterns, ask the right questions, and respond with care, not just technique.

Hirsutism Training
Hirsutism isn’t just “more hair,” it’s often a visible signal of internal imbalance. When androgens like testosterone rise relative to estrogen, hair follicles in sensitive areas become more responsive, producing thicker, darker hairs where they didn’t grow before. This can happen with polycystic ovary syndrome, adrenal hyperplasia, or even certain medications like valproate or cyclosporine.
Hypertrichosis Training
Hypertrichosis, on the other hand, isn’t tied to hormones at all. It can be genetic, triggered by medications like minoxidil or phenytoin, or appear after trauma or illness. Many clients don’t know the difference, and many estheticians don’t either. But at BHI, you will. You’ll learn how to read the distribution: is it linear and androgenic? Or diffuse, fine, and widespread? That distinction is the key, and it tells you whether to proceed with electrolysis or to recommend a blood panel first.
Hirsutism and Hypertrichosis
Highlights
Key Skills
- Identifying hirsutism by its classic androgenic distribution patterns
- Recognizing signs of drug-induced or genetic hypertrichosis
- Conducting non-judgmental consultations that uncover medical history
- Knowing when to pause treatment and refer for lab testing
- Communicating with empathy when clients feel shame or frustration
What You Will Learn
- The medical definitions of hirsutism and hypertrichosis
- How androgen sensitivity alters hair follicle behavior in specific body zones
- Common endocrine disorders and medications linked to abnormal hair growth
- How to document hair growth patterns
- Which symptoms suggest an underlying condition requiring medical evaluation
Understand How Hair Growth Behaves
When a client says, “I never had this before,” they’re asking for answers. At BHI, we teach you to listen beyond the surface. You’ll learn to see the difference between a hormonal shift and a genetic trait, between a side effect and a symptom.
That depth doesn’t just make you better at your job, it makes you someone clients trust with their whole story. And in a field where so many offer the same service, that’s what turns students into masters and a technician into a professional.
