Scientists estimate the average person sheds 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells every hour – that is an astounding one million skin cells in a 24-hour period. When the skin is impaired or otherwise unable to shed non-living cells, health and appearance change drastically. As a skin health professional, you understand the importance of regularly scheduled exfoliating treatments in order to drive results and achieve overall skin health. Merely performing treatments is not enough.
It is also necessary to have a working knowledge of desquamation and why this process is so vitally important to healthy skin function. It may be tempting to combine exfoliation methods and, while this practice can be beneficial, taking the proper precautions and understanding the purpose and mechanism of action of each method will ensure dramatic results without harming your patient’s skin.
